The professional Park clamp, which is almost like a vise-grip, is definitely one to be careful with. By the way, on most high-end steel frames, like those with Reynolds or Columbus tubing - the seat tube is actually only single-butted. Thicker at the bottom bracket area, then thinner all the way to the top. I wonder if a higher quality butted tube is more vulnerable to damage at its thinner middle section?
