Had a heart operation at the end of April. Got back on the bike about 10 days after and every day since. Weigh in at 212 down from 220 and can't seem to drop any more. But basically so what. The more important thing at my age and younger is to make your self stronger. You do that by lifting weights. Squats are my favorite and doing them has improved my riding more than anything else I've tried. I'm enjoying your blog. cjgordonphotography.blogspot.comAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13886914823229858246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8492685525705691186.post-70314460954748846742015-08-11T12:50:03.841-04:002015-08-11T12:50:03.841-04:00I have been car free for over 4 years now. I weighed about 225# when I started riding, and weigh about the same today. I am fit and strong, but the only reason I ride is because I love riding. I eat a lot, and ride a lot. I still ride nearly every day but only once during the day and I now weigh in at 182. Given that we have the same weather, there is your challenge! My biggest problem is that I can't bike commute on the days I coach debate because I can't get from the day job to the high school fast enough.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09963008814386098436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8492685525705691186.post-71499928300949449372015-08-08T08:50:57.191-04:002015-08-08T08:50:57.191-04:00Oh yeah, I agree about how satisfying a long ride ...Oh yeah, I agree about how satisfying a long ride can be. And I was the same way as you - I rode everywhere when I was younger. Even now, if I can conveniently use my bike instead of my car for some little errand, I'll do it. As I mentioned above, I tried to be careful not to eat MORE than usual, but didn't make an effort to reduce or change my diet much while increasing exercise. But I totally agree that if someone really wants to lose weight, especially if they have a lot to lose, there really does have to be some combination of both diet and exercise. Heck a lot of people could make a difference in diet just by eliminating sodas (even the so-called "diet" ones).Brookshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12110998345857993287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8492685525705691186.post-55359842274581792672015-08-07T23:11:47.445-04:002015-08-07T23:11:47.445-04:00The thing about those long rides is that they'...The thing about those long rides is that they're so satisfying, even if they don't actually help our metabolism as much as a couple of shorter rides.

When I was at my thinnest, I was riding everywhere--to school, to work, to the store, to a movie, to a poetry reading. After I realized I was 50 pounds heavier, I made a conscious decision to turn that trend around. (I have graphed it, to keep track over the years). First I tried Paleo, which did work, and also taught me several things about my own particular relationship between diet, exercise, and weight. I stayed steady for a while after that, gained a little back, then read Grant's Eat Bacon Don't Jog. This facilitated me losing the rest of my weight, and in fact I am now essentially back to high school weight, which on me is exactly where I want to be. But, each person is different, we're not exact copies of the same machine. My own situation is that for whatever reasons I was borderline type II diabetic. That information, plus what I learned from Paleo about how my weight reacted to specific foods that I eat, let's me control my weight pretty precisely and manage my blood glucose with a mix of managing what I eat and steady exercise. I ride often, almost daily, but usually medium distances, and for fun and fitness, not for time or speed. Everyone's results may vary depending on personal specific characteristics, but I am convinced that increasing exercise while decreasing sugars and junk food snacking is a solid approach for most.
